Jaime is almost 3, and we still are having issues with his chewing and swallowing.
I was referred to a speech and hearing therapist, and finally after almost a month I got a slot just for his initial assessment.
We are now 4 sessions in and she has completed her initial assessment with a recommendation that he continue for a few more sessions so we can work on a few factors.
Basically with regards to his speech, he is pretty much on par. She is happy with his vocabulary and his sentence structure. Various exercises were done for example describing pictures, talking to cars and fire men, more detailed one like showing him 3 pictures and asking to choose the best picture that described “the girl is jumping”, “the green circle is around the car”. He did exceptionally well, she was very impressed with his attention skills and his way of thinking, she said he was above standard in this regard.
Apparently he uses alot of phase 3 sentences (simple noun, object, verb) where he should be using phase 4/5 sentences already (adjective noun verb noun, indirect object). The therapist will work on this.
With regards to the eating, he has low muscle tone in the jaw area which probably is the reason for his difficulty in chewing. He chews gets tired and then stores it in his cheek. This, she says we will work by doing jaw, tongue and mouth exercises, for example blowing bubbles out of different types of bubble toys.
I’m not too stressed with regards to the low tone lot of kids have it, especially prem kids, and they continue to live a normal life with it, they just adapt and change their way of doing things. For now we just continue with the therapist (also thinking of doing OT) and help my man adapt.
